What the app does

Springaroo keeps count of what you drink, against a figure for your day — worked out from your body mass, what you have planned, and the sky you pick for the day.

Common questions

Why is my figure different from yesterday? Because the day is. The figure changes with the sky you pick — each sky stands for a typical day's heat, humidity and wind — and with what you told the app you were doing. On the Activity tab, How that's worked out under your result breaks down where the number came from, line by line.

It says it is using a general estimate. That means you have not picked today's sky yet. The app still works; it is telling you it is working from a general estimate rather than from the sky you chose. A pick lasts for that day only, so each new day starts from the estimate until you pick again.

Does the app use my location? No. It never asks for it and never reads your phone's position. The weather it works from is the sky you pick, and each sky stands for typical conditions from a fixed table that is our own judgement — not a reading of the weather where you are.

What do the reminders say, and when? Only while you are awake, and only two kinds. If you pick roughly when your activity starts (on the Activity tab, under For how long?), a few come while you're at it — about three for an hour or two — each saying how far in you are and what you've logged so far, such as "Walking the dog · 40 min in. You've logged 0.8 L today." And around 7 pm (earlier if your bed time in Rewards → Your details & settings is early), a summary of the day: how much water you have logged, what you have logged for each of your dogs, and a line about the billabong — such as "You've logged 2.1 L today. Kuma: 0.6 L. Four little mates came down to the billabong. Nice work keeping count." Choose "Not sure" and only the summary comes. None comes in the 90 minutes before bed. The totals are the same ones the Log screen shows. Tapping one opens the Log screen. To stop them, switch reminders off in Rewards → Your details & settings, or in iOS Settings → Springaroo → Notifications.

Reminders are not arriving. Check iOS Settings → Springaroo → Notifications. Reminders also stay quiet outside the waking hours set in Rewards → Your details & settings. They are planned each time you open the app or log a drink. The evening summary is also planned ahead for the next six evenings, so it still comes on a day you do not open the app, and then says nothing has been logged.

What is the sound? Reminders play your phone's standard notification sound, and like any notification sound it is silenced by your phone's silent switch. Inside the app, logging a drink plays a short pour of water and the animals at the billabong have their calls; these play over your music rather than stopping it, and are silent too when the switch is on silent.

Can I use pounds, or fluid ounces? Not yet. The app is metric throughout.

How do I delete my data? Rewards → Your details & settings → Erase all my data, then tap again to confirm. Everything the app stores is on your phone, so that removes all of it there, and reminders still to come are cancelled with it. Reminders that have already arrived are in your phone's notification history rather than the app, and stay there until you clear them. Deleting the app also removes the app's data. On Android, neither reaches a copy already in Google's Auto Backup; on iPhone there is no such copy.

What happened to my history after I reinstalled? It was on the phone, not on a server of ours, so there is no copy for us to restore. On iPhone the app's data is left out of device backups, so a fresh install starts empty and restoring a backup does not bring it back either. On Android the app's data is included in Google's Auto Backup where you have that switched on, so reinstalling may bring it back from there; without it, a fresh install starts empty.

Privacy

Your weight, your drinks and your history are kept on your phone, and the app never sends them anywhere. It sends nothing else off your phone either: it never asks for your location, and the sky you pick stays on the phone for that day only. On Android, if you have Google's Auto Backup switched on, the phone's own backup includes the app's data, under Google's terms rather than ours; it never reaches us. Full detail: the privacy policy.
